Steve and Bridget Pellet of Stanley Estates grow their wine in the beautiful Awatere Valley, in southern Marlborough. This pair has true passion for the region – after setting off an intrepid adventure via Africa in 1991, from their native UK (in their Land Rover, named Stanley!), they discovered Marlborough and decided without hesitation to relocate. Since planting vines in 2003, sustainable wine growing has been the pillar of Steve and Bridget’s approach, and they have had Sustainable Wine New Zealand accreditation since 2005.
1 x Noble Harvest
2 x Albarino
2 x Lagrein
2 x Sauvignon Blanc
At Bird and Barrel, we find it hard to pick a favourite amongst the wines bottled under the Stanrock label – but we’ve selected a few we think you’ll get right into.
Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris are specialties of the region. And for something different, and a wine we have fallen in love, we give you Lagrein. It’s an Italian varietal, related to Shiraz and Pinot Noir – think Pinot Noir with some added oomph. Aromatic and fruit driven with flavours of black plums, ripe red cherries and oak spiciness.
Then, for dessert, we’re throwing in a bottle of the award winning Noble Harvest – 100% Sauvignon Blanc, full botrytis (Noble Rot) , from a single vineyard on Stanley’s home block. Aromas of orange blossom lead into the ripe succulent flavours of honey and marmalade – this is a WOW wine!
