Somos Aglianico, McLaren Vale –
Somos means “we are” in Spanish. Youthful, juicy, vibrant and textural.
Australian winemaker Benjamin Caldwell and his Mexican counterpart Mauricio Ruiz Cantu are the creative duo behind this exciting McLaren Vale project, with some of their wines exported back to South & Central America. The focus is on ‘alternative’ varieties from sustainably managed vineyards and their unique wines are made with a deft touch, bursting with energy and personality.
Aglianico is a black grape, native to the southern regions of Italy, mostly Basilicata and Campania. It is considered with Sangiovese and Nebbiolo to be one of the three greatest Italian varieties. This complex and floral wine is a wonderful example of what can be achieved with this variety in Australia.
After Five Wine Co. Montepulciano, Barossa Valley –
Two mates, Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade, started Purple Hands in 2006 from humble beginnings. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed making around 100 dozen. Craig happens to also be the chief winemaker for Grant Burge Wines and his Montepulciano demonstrates his expertise.
Montepulciano is widely planted throughout central and southern Italy, most notably in Abruzzo, Lazio, Marche, Molise, Umbria and Apulia.
This “Monte” has been recognised by a big score from James Halliday of 95 points, who said “A striking young Italian variety finding a home in the Barossa Valley, and what’s not to like? It strikes a dramatic dense purple pose in the glass, the scent is pure La Dolce Vita with exotic spice, black cherry and enduring anise. It flows beautifully across the tongue, smooth, intense but with lively tannins.” And we agree!
Precious Little Wines Gruner Veltliner, Lobethal, Adelaide Hills –
The Precious Little Wine label was founded by mates – viticulturist Adam Smith and winemaker Marty O’Flaherty in 2016. The competitive duo played cricket against each other and have been mates who have shared a friendly and sledge-filled rivalry ever since. They jumped on the opportunity to create a brand forged on their desire not to become the next “big volume commercial” success but instead craft “unique and precious little parcels of fruit” into intriguing small batch wines.
Grüner Veltliner (Green Veltliner) is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. This wine has an intriguing note of tarragon and musk on the nose, along with the lifted florals. A palate of white stone fruit with lime, grapefruit and herbal elements and a light, lingering zesty finish.
